A commercial on TV in which a child shouts out daddy, daddy, guess what, I only had one cavity is a testimonial of the sad reality of our dental health. One cavity every six months actually results in the child still having cavities in most of his teeth by the time he reaches 21.

Cavities are found in almost everyone’s teeth. Among the causes for this are low fluoride content in the water and poor dental hygiene. Like heart disease, susceptibility to cavities seems to run in families, where everybody has bad teeth even though there’s no apparent reason for it. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you can do away with dental hygiene on account of your grandfather’s good dental health. Maybe his hometown provided fluoridated water. Sweets were probably not eaten. Salt water and tooth powder were probably his tools in keeping his teeth clean.

Your options are plenty even if you can’t do anything about your heredity. Let the government know that your children and other’s children are in need of fluoridated water for their dental health. Research shows that the presence of cavities is cut by half when children drink fluoridated water. Fluoride keeps calcium within the bones of the aged, decreasing the chances of them developing osteoporosis.

You and your children should also cut down on sugar, particularly sugar loaded foods between or just after meals. Do away with food with sticky sugar. Before dental caries are formed, plaque first appears on the teeth. Bacteria found in plaque produce acid that causes teeth to wear away. Table sugar forms the food of the bacteria.

The research of several countries reveals that it is better to consume sugar during meals rather than between them. In recent years, British mothers have taken to using infant pacifiers which give the baby a small quantity of sweet syrup as he sucks. But if all this weren’t convincing enough, there is one medical curiosity which should hammer the point home most dramatically.

A disease known as hereditary fructose intolerance is known to attack families. These people can eat foods with glucose, but not foods with fructose or sucrose. Early in life, such victims learn to avoid sucrose or any food containing it. Because of this, they only have a few cavities even if they consume food containing lots of carbohydrates.

Clearly, it is sugar and not refined foods or starches that account for the almost universal occurrence of cavities in Western societies. Remember, too, that the mouth particularly gums and teeth are sensitive to your nutritional state, in general. Your dental health and tooth formation will be improved as long as you take your vitamins and minerals. Chewing on hard food will actually help in cleaning teeth and also in stimulating gums.

It seems pretty obvious now the need for regular dental check ups as well as regular brushing. Otherwise, you could be looking at a bleak dental future.
