The Silent Killers at Home: Cleaners, Soaps, and Detergents

by

We grow up thinking of home as our safety net. People set aside a special room or quiet spot where the rest of the world vanishes. In their quiet space, the ills of the world cannot touch them, or so they think. Unless you carefully chose your furnishings from flooring to the paint on the walls, you home could be full of elements that cause cancer and a host of other maladies.

Manufacturing companies are not required to tell you the contents of their products. The warning labels are vague at best and non-existent on clothing, carpeting, and furniture.

Physical problems don\’t crop up for years.

By the time they rear their ugly heads, it is too late.

Prevention is the key to halting

cancer, nerve damage, kidney and liver problems

, as well as other ailments caused by everyday products we presume are safe. It is the key to good health. Face it: we all picture ourselves as being as beautiful as the models in the hair shampoo commercials, that the most dazzling of white teeth can be ours by using the latest toothpaste; or that our countertops will glimmer with the latest cleaner used by the top-rated

in London.

The following lists the separate groups of cleaners, the various chemicals found in them, and the health issues they cause.

Glass and Window Cleaners:

2-butoxyethanol or butyl cellosolve, alocohols, ammonia, anionic surfactant, ethanolamine, ethylene glycol butyl ether (EGBE), isobutane, naphtha, phosphoric acid, and synthetic dyes and scents.

Health problems: Naphtha and EGBE cause respiratory problems and liver and kidney damage and depress the central nervous system, causing mental confusion, suspected carcinogens; eye and severe skin irritations, asthma, and lung problems; fatal if swallowed.

All-Purpose Cleaners, Carpet Spot Removers, Carpet Cleaners:

ammonia, bleach, butyl cellusolve, 2-butoxyethanol, chlorides, diethanolamine, ethers, ethylen glycol, hydroxyacetic acid, hydroxides,

limonene, morpholine, naphtha, perchloroethylene, petroleum distillates, phenols, phosphoric acid, trisodium phosphate, volatile organic compounds.

Health problems: Irritants to eyes, can cause blindness; fatal if swallowed; headaches, nausea, neurological damage, memory loss; suspected carcinogens; neurotoxins; damage to blood, kidneys and liver; severe burning of the skin; overexposure to phosphoric acid is deadly; petroleum distillates are flammable and carcinogenic.

In addition, if an all-purpose cleaner, soap, or detergent is antibacterial, it probably contains

triclosan

. Absorption through the skin has been tied to liver damage.

For the sake of the environment and your health, stop using antibacterial products.

They do not kill germs. Wash your hands with soap and water upon returning home, after using the restroom, and before handling food to protect you against germs.

Antibacterial cleaners and soaps washed into your sewer system or septic system kill the enzymes that eat bacteria and solid waste matter. Why kill the most valuable defense against germs?

Note: Read labels!

Look for words such as sodium dioxide. It is found in medicine, food, carpeting, clothing, drink bottles, herbicides, cleaners, and even hand lotions. This dangerous chemical causes cancer, mental illness, and diabetes, for starters. Burning or heating plastic releases the chemical into the air. Never heat food in the microwave in plastic or freeze water in plastic bottles.

To avoid exposing yourself to harmful cleaners, consider hiring professional domestic cleaners to get your home thoroughly cleaned instead of you. There are many reliable domestic cleaning services providers you can find on Internet or Yellow Pages.
