Balancing Work at Home

by

David Williams 2

There are many people who choose to make their livlihood out of living at home. However, when it comes to doing it successfully, this is often a tug-of-war battle.

There are certainly many advantages to be had from being able to work from the comfort of your own home. However, if you are trying to make sure that you are getting everything done that you possibly can in a given amount of time, then there are a few things that you should consider. First, if you haven’t already done so, try to create a separate work environment for yourself at your home. Having a designated work area is a great way to make sure that you are keeping your work or career separated from your personal life; and it is absolutely incredibly what a few walls can do to help you accomplish this.

If a second room isn’t available to you, you can always try to figure out other creative ways to make your home liveable. For example, you might purchase a desk and a Chinese silk screen to help cordon off an area in your living room where you do your work. If space is an issue and this is simply not possible, then you can always resort to having certain hours or a designated time during which your work will be out on the dining room table or in another area. As a sort of last resort, you can always pick up your work and head off to the nearest library or WiFi hot spot to get your work done. The main thing to keep in mind when you work from home is flexibility. Flexibility here not only refers to the fact that when you work from home, your schedule is increasingly more flexible; but flexibility also refers to the fact that if and when the time comes for you to have to be more mobile, you are going to need to figure out a way to work it out.

Part of the whole ‘work from home’ mentality is your ability to stay organized. For instance, if you have to go to the library one day to do work and you have no other choice, you should be able to grab all of the paperwork and/or files that you need in one motion. In other words, they should all be in a place that is easily accessible, labeled and stored properly (such as a file folder). This will serve you well in the long run; trust me! Another part of working from home means that you need to be able to cut off or shut out distractions. If you know that working from home means that you will be more prone to distractions such as your refrigerator, friends stopping by, babysitting the kids, etc., then find a different arrangement. In the end, you may discover that you cannot do your work from the comfort of your own home and are thus forced to find a different spot. Whatever the situation, working from home can be (and is) very rewarding. It’s simply a matter of figuring out what works best for you.
