Capturing Outdoor Sports
by
Steve Mc Karmik
If you’re into outdoor sports then you’re probably aware that they make for some of the best photographs and videos you’re likely to get of yourself. Whether it’s a shot of you climbing some spectacular cliff face or doing a fantastic dyno (launching yourself from one rocky hang to another by arm strength alone), it’s screeching round a corner or over taking the leader of the pack at high speeds, or whether it’s a dangerous looking bail on a wakeboard there are countless golden moments in any outdoor or extreme sport and it’s great to be able to capture these moments on film or in stills to be able to enjoy on future occasions. Imagine having a high definition photograph of yourself hanging from a high up stalactite in a cave, or uploading a montage of your best moments onto YouTube. You’ve seen other people’s but until now you’ve lacked the equipment and the know how to capture your own exploits in the same way. So just how to you best go about getting such moments on film?
Your best friend in this plight will be a Go Pro camera such as the Go Pro HD Naked or Motorsport. These have many advantages and will attach to your helmet, your vehicle or your gear to capture high definition (1080dp) video of your exploits without you having to worry about getting shots. Alternatively you can set them to take high quality pictures at set intervals as you go about your business which can be great fun looking over once you get back.
The Go Pro HD Naked can then be set up how you please whether you want it pointing at yourself for an up-close-and-persona portrait of your own expression, or mounted on your helmet to capture the action from your perspective. This then gets you far better action shots than you could achieve otherwise as it films for the entire duration of your activity meaning that you won’t miss any of those amazing un-predictable moments and because it frees up your hands allowing you to concentrate on the sport.
This does however have some limitations in that it uses a very close up shot of yourself which doesn’t allow for much understanding of the context, or an eye-view (from the helmet mount) that could have been taken by anyone and won’t capture the skill or danger involved in what you are doing. A single Go Pro HD Naked or Motorsport is a great starting point then, but if you’re serious about getting great shots of your sport or pass-time, then you should purchase multiple Go Pro cameras in order to get multiple different angles on your adventures. This way you can then assemble a full picture from the tapestry of images and videos and edit them together for a more complete picture of your activities.
Also a good idea is to ensure that more than one of your party have a Go Pro with them so that you can get 3rd person videos and images of yourselves meaning that you get to see your jumps and tricks from a distance which can be edited into those fantastic pictures that will look great one your wall.
